Eat & Drink
Milan is well known for trendy, upscale, fashionable restaurants, probably a reflection of the business-oriented culture that made the city prosper and the refined tastes of upper classes that flourished with it. One of its most famous dishes is the Risotto alle Milanese, seasoned with saffron, a spice that has at times been more expensive than gold. Milan tends to favor meat and the Costoletta (veal cutlets) alla Milanese is a popular typical local dish, as is the Ossobuco (veal shank containing marrowbone). Although there is some controversy over whether Ossobuco originated in Milan or not, it is found in a lot of menus around town. The polenta (cornmeal paste) is quite characteristic of the area as well. Once considered food for peasants, the polenta has evolved into something of a gourmet dish, thanks to creative chefs. In winter months, do not miss out on the traditional Minestrone soup. Although plenty of typical local cuisine is to be found, Milan is an international city and the abundant options of excellent restaurants offering a variety of dishes is certain to satisfy the most discerning clients. What came as a surprise in our last visit was how much seafood you now can find, whether at specialized seafood or regular restaurants, that also have options of pasta with seafood in the menu, as well as fish and shrimp. Join the locals in their delightful habit of having an aperitivo around 6pm, before dinner. And, if in town during Christmas, do try some panettone, a type of fruit loaf beloved by locals.
Considered one of the best seafood restaurants in town the Langosteria is a high end venue in Tortona and has become quite famous for the excellence in its dishes and fine dining. The ambience is upscale with dim lighting and a sophisticated décor in dark wood, burgundy chairs and cushions. Lobsters, oysters, high quality cod and other seafood, everything tempting and delicious. They interestingly also… Read more »

The restaurant is frequented by a fashionable clientele, as well as business people and see-and-be-seen habitués. The food, though good, is honestly not as amazing as the exquisite ambience may lead you to… Read more »

Located in the Montenapoleone area, the Solferino is everything you would expect from an old school Italian restaurant: a warm welcome by distinctive looking senior hosts, the cozy ambience reminiscent of grandma’s dining room, waiters who have probably been working there for decades, and, of course, the outstanding food. We started with crude tuna envoltini in cheese and avocado cream, which was good. The highlight… Read more »
For delicious ice cream head to one of the Amorinos in town, we have been to two of them, in Navigli and Brera. They have mostly the usual flavors, all very tasty, and creativity is left to the way it is beautifully served, as a flower in cones. They also have macarons filled with ice cream, which were quite lovely. Passion fruit, pistachio, lemon and… Read more »
