Milan is a northern Italian city very close to the Alps, but even though that might lead you to believe it to be a cold city (or chilly at least), summers are hot. Perhaps not as hot as Rome, but still very high temperatures, which could make summer days in town a little unpleasant if you enjoy walking around. In August, Italians travel to the coastal areas and Milan is left to the hordes of tourists. Many authentic local restaurants close. If summer cannot be avoided, perhaps try June or early July. Spring and fall are ideal for the milder temperatures and more options to enjoy authentic Italian experiences. From November to March Milan gets cold, which attracts less visitors and makes hotel rates a little lower, but that does depend on the amount of business travelers in town.
