Laurentina

One of the typical and emblematic dishes of Portugal is the salted cod, in local language called “bacalhau”. It will be very difficult to find the fresh version of the fish in the country, it has to do with history and how Portuguese fishermen used to catch them in northern seas and had them salted in order to bear the journey back (at a time when refrigerated vessels were not available). So, if trying the dish that has become part of the country’s culture is what you are looking for, then Laurentina is a good option for a meal. It is a super traditional restaurant in the city, frequented by locals and entire families, who can be seen chatting around large tables whilst enjoying an enormous amount of food. We started our feast with the more than perfect pastel de bacalhau and the typical alheiras, both delicious. We followed with just one dish, since it served two (maybe three), the cod Laurentina, which was scrumptiously good. It was a no-desserts-thank-you kind of day, but the menu had various Portuguese sweets and some international ones that looked tempting. The restaurant also serves traditional dishes from Mozambique, a country that has historical ties to Portugal.
