There is nothing more Viennese than its famous cafes, except perhaps the Waltz. Very much a part of the city’s history, the cafes were places where illustrious characters, artists and intellectuals once gathered. Many are classical and stunning, and serve very traditional pies and desserts such as Sachertorte or the Apfelstrudel, the latter being in fact Austrian and not German as many believe it to be. Also, not to be missed is the famous wiener schnitzel or any of the local cured sausages and meats. If you are around in the summertime, enjoy the typical taverns frequented by a local clientele, some very similar to the southern German Biergartens.
Sacher, one of the most traditional cafes in Europe, is located in a hotel of the same name and is world known for its namesake pie. Heurigers are the Austrian taverns which produce their own wine. With typical décor, resembling German taverns, the Austrian heurigers seemed more welcoming and we felt like we were in a traditional local place. Considered one of the best restaurants in Austria, with two Michelin stars, the Steirereck is priced accordingly and hence is a good option for special occasions.
