Café Odeon

Centrally located at Bellevue, by the lake and the Opera House, this legendary café was opened just before the first Great War. It is small Art Nouveau establishment with crystal chandeliers, brass, marble and wood. Nowadays it feels very old style, in a European way, but its historic importance brings charm to the place. We enjoyed sitting at the same tables as Einstein, Toscanini, James Joyce, Trotsky and so many others, who are said to have once spent countless hours adrift in their thoughts at these very tables. It is also said that Café Odeon was the birthplace of Dadaism. Open all day long, even for breakfast, we preferred evenings when the atmosphere is most charming for outdoor seating in dim lighting. The food is not particularly amazing, with a menu typical of an old style European café. We thought we could not go wrong with a good old club sandwich and it delivered. There are other tempting options such as burgers, schnitzels, avocado salads and other classics. It is a good choice for an unpretentious satisfying meal with a significant historical value.
