Vista Restaurante

The most recent restaurant in the Algarve region to have been awarded a Michelin star is based at Hotel Bela Vista. The small palace, which leans over Portimão’s main beach, has a beautiful bar worthy of an early start to give you time to savor the lovely selection of drinks and cocktails. Common rooms adorned with traditional Portuguese tiled walls, a grand piano and a lovely terrace with sea views and a fresh evening breeze all add to the allure. But let’s get right to it: the food was simply the very best meal we had in the Algarve, given the sheer mastery of the rigorous preparation and elaborate presentation. Chef João Oliveira has graced the famous Yeatman in Porto city as well as Vila Joya, the two Michelin star property in the Algarve. We relished the choice of a three, four or eight course meal, yet choose three, since formal menu tastings can take a rather long time. In fact, it was almost a relief to be able to have such high quality dining within a short amount of time. The menu’s theme is sustainability, given that all ingredients are locally sourced. There were a few little surprises in store, such as the pre-dinner amuse bouche, but the masterpieces certainly were the crayfish in a vegetable foam, an incredibly soft and tasty lamb and a matured veal in wine reduction. As expected, the dishes were refined, beautifully presented and delicious. Even if you are not staying locally in Portimão, Vista is worth the trip. It is not an accessibly priced dining experience, as all starred restaurants tend to be, yet is well sought after, hence book ahead.
