The Cafes of Vienna

Sacher, one of the most traditional cafes in Europe, is located in a hotel of the same name and is world known for its namesake pie. The sachertorte, which resembles a cake with layers of jelly filled chocolate dough, can be found in many European cities nowadays. But, when in Vienna, you simply have to sample the original pie in its place of origin. The cafe itself is stunning, with crystal chandeliers and lots of red details on its walls, carpets and upholstery. Another world-renowned cafe is Demel, next to Hofburg Palace. Demel used to cater pies to the royal Family and was Empress Sissi’s favorite. The eighteenth-century building has a stunning wooden ceiling and decorated walls in the different rooms. There is a glass cabinet displaying mouthwatering pies and desserts. If the weather is cold, go for the hot chocolate. The Viennese cafes all serve many visitors, but one has become too much of a tourist attraction, the Café Central, hence we do not recommend it.
